A 60-year-old man in Germany said he got vaccinated against COVID-19 dozens of times to sell forged vaccination cards with real vaccine batch numbers to others who don’t want to get a shot, according to The Associated Press.
The man is from the eastern Germany city of Magdeburg, though his name wasn’t released by authorities in line with German privacy rules, the AP reported. Police said he received up to 90 shots at vaccination centers across the eastern state of Saxony for months until he was caught in March.
The man was stopped at a vaccination center in Eilenburg in Saxony when he showed up for a shot for the second day in a row. Police confiscated blank vaccine cards and began criminal proceedings. He wasn’t detained but is under investigation for unauthorized issuance of vaccine cards and document forgery, the AP reported.
Police said he received approximately 90 shots, which were from different brands. They didn’t disclose what effects the dozens of shots have had on his health.
German police have carried out numerous raids in recent months for vaccine card fraud, the AP reported, as some unvaccinated people have sought a card to access venues that require proof of vaccination, such as restaurants, theaters, and some workplaces.
Germany has reported high COVID-19 case numbers in recent weeks due to the BA.2 Omicron subvariant, the AP reported. At the same time, most coronavirus safety protocols ended last week, and masks are no longer required in most public spaces.
Public health experts have said the most recent surge of infections in Germany may have peaked, the AP reported. On Sunday, the country reported 74,000 new daily cases, as compared with 111,000 new daily cases the week before.
