Jorge Cruise Insists Intermittent Fasting Is 'Better Than Keto' — and Achieves the Same Results

The controversial keto diet is all the rage recently, but celebrity trainer Jorge Cruise says the low-carb, high-fat diet is putting people’s health at risk.

“Keto after 90 days can cause fatty liver damage,” Cruise, who’s worked with Brooke Burke, Steve Harvey, Khloé Kardashian and more, tells PEOPLE. “If you do straight keto, you literally look like a stick. You’ll be rail-thin, but you’ll have a fatty liver and liver disease. It makes no sense to do keto long-term.”

Instead, the New York Times bestselling author touts his “Cruise Control” diet, which splits the day into two zones — a 16-hour evening and overnight “burn zone” (aka semi-fasting) followed by an eight-hour “boost zone” (aka eating) — as a healthy and equally effective alternative.

In his new book The Cruise Control Diet, Cruise, 48, offers boost zone recipes such as portobello mini pizzas, zoodle spaghetti and meatballs and “indulgences” like almond butter cookies. (Cruise isn’t a fan of counting calories and insists everyone should feel free to dig into pizza and wine.)

During the no-sugar burn-zone, clients can make a double chocolate fudge mousse or satiate their appetite with a vanilla chai tea latte.

“When my clients are hungry, we’ll suppress the appetite with healthy fats,” he explains. “You will not gain any weight, you won’t break the fast and you’ll lose a pound of belly fat [a week]. The only macro-nutrients that break the fast are carbohydrates and protein. Those raise insulin, and that’s what this whole diet is about. It’s about bio-hacking and cheating insulin so you can turn off hunger.”

And while diet comes first when it comes to weight loss, Cruise also offers exercise tips in his new book.

“100 percent you cannot out-train a poor diet,” he says about making sure diet and exercise go hand in hand. “I don’t care if you have 10 hours a day at the gym. You can sit down and have a pizza, a Snickers bar, ice cream and you’re at 20,000 pounds. It’s so hard on your body. You’ve got to avoid sugar.”

At the end of the day, Cruise just wants his clients to feel healthy and happy — and fully enjoy life.

Says the trainer: “We eat an anti-inflammatory diet, but you can eat carbs on this plan every day! Pizza, pasta, wine, tequila … you can eat normally. You really can.”
