Amber Stevens West on the Strangest Place She Has Ever Changed 6-Month-Old Daughter Ava's Diaper

When duty calls, a mom answers.

In a recent chat with PEOPLE’s Celeb Parents Get Real, actress and new mama Amber Stevens West — who welcomed her first child, daughter Ava Laverne, last October — opened up about the weirdest place she ahas ever had to change her now-6-month-old baby girl’s diaper.

“Once you have a baby, you realize how many places do not have changing tables for you and you just gotta improvise,” shares the Happy Together star, 32, recalling that the “most inappropriate place” for her was “on a café table in front of a café.”

“The bathroom there didn’t have anything. I’m not about to put my baby on the floor,” she explains, adding that her car was also too far away.

“You do what you gotta do,” Stevens West quips. “You just gotta do it fast.”

The new mom goes on to share that while she was initially worried she wouldn’t be able to be “in tune” with her baby girl, luckily that hasn’t been the case.

“That was a big concern of mine when I was pregnant, that I wouldn’t be able to understand what my baby needed. But I think I’m following my intuition pretty well and we’re very much in sync,” Stevens West explains to PEOPLE.

“I can anticipate her needs before she flips out too much for them, so that I’m really grateful for,” she adds. “Hopefully that continues throughout her life.”

As for her favorite activity to do with her daughter, for now, reading together is at the top of the list.

“My husband and I read to her every single day. We try to repeat books over and over so that eventually when she gets older she’ll know how to read them herself,” the actress shares, adding that “it also keeps her patient.”

Continuing, she remarks of Ava, “She’ll try and pay attention to them for a little while. Obviously that’s not gonna last forever … but we’re not there yet.”

After welcoming her first child with husband Andrew J. West on Oct. 7 — which just so happens to be Stevens West’s birthday, too — the couple told PEOPLE they were “completely obsessed” with their bundle of joy.

In a sweet nod to the couple’s family, Ava’s name was suggested by one of her grandmothers early in the pregnancy, and both new parents were immediately enamored with the moniker. Her middle name, Laverne, was chosen in honor of two great-grandmothers — one on either side of the family.

“We feel like we’ve been waiting our entire lives to meet our daughter, Ava,” the spouses shared with PEOPLE. “Now that she’s here, we’re completely obsessed. She’s already introduced a new and unique type of love into our lives and we’re so excited to see what else she will show us and teach us in the years to come.”
